At least 13 people were killed and nearly 100 injured after an Interoceanic passenger train derailed while rounding a bend near Nizanda in Mexico’s Oaxaca region, according to the Mexican navy.
The train, carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, left the tracks and partially tipped over, prompting a large emergency response.
Thirty-six of the injured were hospitalised, with five reported to be in serious condition, while federal authorities confirmed an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Senior government officials travelled to the scene as state and federal agencies coordinated assistance for victims of the accident on the strategically important rail link.
