The United States is “very close” to securing a path toward ending the conflict in Ukraine, according to President Donald Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg, who told Fox News that Washington’s latest peace proposal could bring hostilities to a close.
The 28-point plan, delivered to Kiev last week, reportedly asks Ukraine to abandon its NATO ambitions, withdraw from remaining parts of Donbass under its control, and accept limits on its armed forces — demands long rejected by both Kiev and its Western European allies.
Talks on the proposal began in Geneva on Sunday with Ukrainian and European officials, with consultations between US and Russian representatives expected soon.
Kellogg described Ukraine’s public rejection of key terms as political “posturing,” saying the parties are in the final stretch of negotiations. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed receiving the updated US plan, calling it a revision of a proposal discussed during his meeting with Trump in Alaska.
The push for a settlement comes as President Volodymyr Zelensky faces fresh domestic challenges following a corruption scandal involving his inner circle and setbacks on the battlefield. Trump has signaled impatience with Kiev’s stance, saying Zelensky is free to “continue to fight his little heart out” if he refuses the deal.
