President Donald Trump was rushed from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton after a gunman fired multiple shots near a security checkpoint, triggering panic inside the ballroom as guests, including journalists, took cover under tables.
“That was very unexpected but incredibly acted upon by Secret Service and law enforcement,” the president told reporters shortly after 10:30 p.m. He called their speedy response “a very beautiful thing.”
Trump said that one officer was shot, but was protected by a “very good bulletproof vest.” He described the assailant as a “thug,” a “lone wolf” and a “whack job.”
The shooter was quickly subdued by authorities, though one United States Secret Service agent was reportedly shot, with their condition unclear.

Trump was evacuated alongside senior officials including JD Vance and Mike Johnson and suggested the event continue if deemed safe.
