President Donald Trump is expected to decide within two weeks whether the US will intervene in the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict, as Israel and Iran trade missile and drone attacks with no clear end in sight.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that while Trump remains open to a diplomatic resolution, his administration’s top priority is preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
“The president is always interested in a diplomatic solution …he is a peacemaker in chief. He is the ‘peace through strength’ president. And so if there’s a chance for diplomacy, the president’s always going to grab it,” Leavitt said. “But he’s not afraid to use strength as well, I will add.”
Talks between Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s foreign minister suggest backchannel negotiations may be underway, but Trump has also floated more aggressive rhetoric, including veiled threats against Iran’s leadership and demands for unconditional surrender.
