Trump warns Iran after strike on Qatar gas infrastructure

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that any further attack on Qatar’s gas infrastructure would trigger overwhelming American retaliation after a strike on the South Pars gas field intensified tensions across the Gulf and drew condemnation from Qatar over threats to global energy security.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said Israel had struck “a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran,” adding that only “a relatively small section of the whole has been hit.” He insisted the United States had no prior knowledge of the specific operation and said Qatar “was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen.”

Trump said Iran had responded by attacking part of Qatar’s LNG infrastructure despite, in his words, lacking the “pertinent facts” about the original strike. He warned that “no more attacks will be made by Israel” on the South Pars field unless Iran targeted Qatar again, adding that if that happened, “the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before.” He also said he did not want to authorize that level of destruction because of the long-term consequences for Iran.

Qatar has meanwhile condemned the attack on South Pars, which is jointly linked to Qatar’s North Field, the world’s largest natural gas reserve. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari described the strike as “a dangerous and irresponsible step amid the current military escalation in the region,” saying attacks on energy infrastructure posed a direct threat to global energy security and regional stability.

Al-Ansari urged all parties to avoid targeting critical facilities, warning that energy assets should not become part of the military confrontation.

The South Pars/North Field reserve holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and underpins most of Qatar’s export earnings, making any disruption significant for global LNG markets. Damage was reported at processing facilities on the Iranian side of the field, while in the hours after the strike, missiles also hit the Ras Laffan LNG hub in Qatar, with local authorities blaming Iran.

Iran has vowed to retaliate further if its energy infrastructure remains under attack. In a military statement carried by Iranian media, officials said any assault on the country’s fuel, gas or economic facilities by what it called the “American-Zionist enemy” would lead to severe strikes on the source of that aggression, adding that energy infrastructure in countries linked to such attacks would be treated as legitimate targets.
