Two arrested as police recover $30K in stolen property

More than $30,000 in stolen property has been recovered in Southland this week after the arrest of two men.

The pair, aged 42 and 38, from Niagara and Gore, were charged with receiving stolen property after being arrested on Tuesday.

It follows an investigation into several rural burglaries across eastern Southland stretching back to June.

Acting Senior Sergeant Blair Shirley says the arrests and recovery of people’s property are a positive outcome for affected victims and the wider community.

“It also serves as a reminder to people living rurally about the importance of maintaining good security practices,” he says.

“Simple measures can make a significant difference in reducing the risk of becoming a victim of crime. We encourage people to ensure vehicles are locked and keys are secured, trailers are fitted with locks where possible, and valuable equipment is stored in locked sheds or secure areas.”

Police urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any behaviour that appears suspicious or out of place in their communities. Information provided by the public is invaluable and often plays a key role in helping Police prevent and investigate offending.

The pair are due to appear in Invercargill District Court on 8 September.

Illegal or suspicious activity should be reported to Police on 111 if it’s happening now, or via 105.
