Two Israeli diplomats were fatally shot at close range outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night while attending an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee.
The suspected shooter, Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, was apprehended by security after entering the museum and allegedly shouting “Free, free Palestine!”
Authorities confirmed that Rodriguez acted alone and his firearm was recovered. The victims—a man and a woman who were reportedly dating and close to getting engaged—were found unconscious at the scene and could not be revived.
DC officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Pamela Smith, condemned the shooting as an act of violence and hate.
Federal and local law enforcement, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime or act of terrorism.
Israeli and U.S. leaders, including Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. and UN, denounced the killings as anti-Semitic terrorism, vowing justice for the victims.
