The United States has reportedly carried out another strike on an alleged drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean, marking the sixth such attack since early September, amid growing international condemnation over their legality.
A US official confirmed the strike, which for the first time left survivors, but offered few details. The operations, authorised by President Donald Trump as part of a “war on narco-terrorists” linked to Venezuela, have killed at least 27 people and drawn sharp criticism from rights groups and the Venezuelan government.
Caracas has labelled the strikes “extrajudicial assassinations,” with its UN ambassador calling for a Security Council probe after two Trinidadian fishermen were reportedly killed in one of the attacks.
The strikes come as the US escalates its military presence in the Caribbean, deploying destroyers, fighter jets, and 6,500 troops, while Trump has also authorised CIA operations in Venezuela and floated possible ground assaults.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused Washington of attempting to overthrow his government, warning against a “CIA-orchestrated coup.”
In a further twist, Admiral Alvin Holsey, head of US Southern Command overseeing the Caribbean campaign, unexpectedly announced his retirement effective December 2025, two years ahead of schedule, citing no reason for his departure.
