The Trump administration is reportedly considering converting massive warehouses—some originally built for Amazon—into large-scale detention centres for immigrants, NBC News has revealed, citing government sources.
The proposed facilities, described by a Department of Homeland Security official as “mega detention centres,” would be located near southern airports frequently used for deportations to improve operational efficiency. The warehouses under review range from 600,000 to several million square feet, dwarfing existing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities such as those in Tacoma and El Paso.
The plan forms part of President Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown, which he says will lead to the largest deportation operation in US history, targeting an estimated 25 million undocumented migrants.
ICE intends to fund the conversions using a share of $45 billion allocated for detention expansion under a recent federal spending bill.
The number of people in ICE custody reached a record 66,000 this week, according to internal Department of Homeland Security data.
