The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture has carried out unannounced inspections at 12 prisons across New Zealand, including Auckland Prison, Waikeria, Arohata, Rimutaka, Christchurch Men’s and Women’s, Rolleston, Otago Corrections Facility, and Invercargill.

The visits, conducted under the UN’s optional protocol to the Convention Against Torture, were part of its global mandate to assess safeguards against torture and ill-treatment in detention facilities.

The committee’s findings will be reported to the government, which decides whether to make them public.

The inspections follow recent reports by the Chief Ombudsman and the Office of the Inspectorate that highlighted human rights concerns, particularly around prolonged solitary confinement and restrictive regimes.
