The Public Service Association (PSA) says 63 roles are set to go in a proposed Wellington City Council restructure, including 31 already vacant positions, while dozens more face uncertainty.
The council confirmed around 30 jobs, many managerial, are directly under threat.
PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons told state-funded legacy media the cuts would undermine specialist expertise in parks, recreation and safety, while leaving remaining staff overstretched, calling the move inappropriate so close to local elections.
The union is urging the council to withdraw the plan, while the council has promised to help displaced workers find alternative roles.
