The United States has approved the proposed sale of five advanced MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and associated equipment to New Zealand in a deal valued at up to NZ$2.6 billion, alongside a separate NZ$119 million package for MK 54 torpedoes.

The helicopters, first announced by then Defence Minister Judith Collins and Foreign Minister Winston Peters in 2025 as replacements for the Navy’s ageing maritime fleet, are designed for anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance and strike operations.

Capable of carrying heavy payloads and equipped with torpedoes, Hellfire missiles and precision-guided weapons, the aircraft are already operated by Australia, the United States and several allied nations. The US State Department said the acquisition would strengthen New Zealand’s ability to protect critical infrastructure and respond to emerging security threats, while enhancing homeland defence capabilities.

The proposed sales must still receive approval from the US Congress before proceeding.

  1. How about New Zealand declaring itself a neutral country. Ireland has been a neutral country for over a hundred years. Their military budget, which is mainly spent on peacekeeping duties, is less than half of what NZ taxpayers are being forced to pay.

    • Yes…..great idea…Switzerland is a neutral country and does ok…. five and a third eyes is buggered by faulty surveillance algorithms and all the ‘support’ money to bogus charities simply goes to arms dealers and condominia.

    • Do you want to be regime changed by the US? who do you think will put their hands up to be their willing puppets? Maori? Indians? Muslims? Sihks? choose carefully.

  2. NZ should have purchased contra-rotating / coaxial rotor choppers from Russia, eliminating the inefficient tail rotor!
But..no one in Parliament or the holder of the Defence Portfolio ever asked for public input as to where their tax money would be spent or as they love to say in the parasitic halls of government, ‘investment in defence capabilities’…!

  3. Expect NZ govt to hand out more cash to the likes of Ukraine, for the privilege of interoperability with NATO pre-qualified equipment.

  4. Yep what a fantastic way to spend 2.7 billion (in other words a true 5.4 billion, lying fkers) yeah, get the slimy witch collins and greaseball peters to pay the yank warpig machine some extra cash to bomb the fk outta a few more countries… What a lovely plan…and hey, NZ can become a big-shot warpig machine too – because we can strut “hellfire” missiles and carry “heavy payloads” and defeat “the enemy” with five fancy horsesh*t helicopters….. “The enemy” won’t have a chance against us then… FKN STUPID STUPID CLOWNS

  5. Warfare is now enacted by sanctions, financial ambush and drones.

    Expensive machines to ‘defend’ us?

Or expensive machines to fund US?

  6. All the muppets lining up to vote NZF because they are, in spite of deals like this, somehow magically not part of mainstream politics?

Suffice to say, we remain firmly in the US’s back pocket, owned by its big venture capitalists, still squandering public money on things we don’t need to keep their profit margins healthy, whilst essential services like healthcare and education, for New Zealanders, go seriously under funded.

  7. Luxon say can’t afford super… But they can spend billions on defence. Shows where their priorities lie or should I say that they are just puppets to their handlers
