Republicans risk losing younger voters unless living standards improve, the vice president has said.
The US Republican Party must address the economic pressures facing Americans or risk driving more young people toward socialism, Vice President J.D. Vance has said.
Vance made the remarks in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, pointing to the cost of housing and education, access to well-paid jobs, and the ability to start a family as key concerns.
“Our response to that can’t just be to ignore the economic concerns that I think are feeding this rising interest in socialism,” Vance said.
He pointed to what he described as trillions of dollars in new investment flowing into the US, saying it would create middle-class jobs. He also cited stabilizing housing prices and the administration’s push for lower interest rates, while acknowledging that the effects of its policies could take time to be felt.
“My warning to my fellow Republicans would be if we don’t get this right, don’t blame young people for being sympathetic to socialism. We’ve got to blame ourselves,” Vance said.
He added that Republicans could not counter the trend simply by defending the free market, saying “You don’t stop socialism by throwing slogans at people about the free market. You stop socialism by making people’s lives better.”
Vance’s comments come ahead of November’s midterm elections, with the cost of living among the main issues worrying voters. A national poll conducted by Marquette University Law School in May showed inflation and living costs were the public’s top concern, cited by 37% of respondents.
Economic pressures have been compounded by higher energy costs fueled by the US-Israeli war on Iran and by Trump’s tariffs, while high home prices have made homeownership more difficult to attain. The median asking price for a US home stood at $430,000 in June, according to data cited by Forbes.
The economic strain has coincided with greater openness to socialism among younger Americans. A Gallup poll in 2025 showed that 39% of US adults viewed socialism positively, compared to 54% that held a high opinion of capitalism, and 81% that favored free enterprise, with socialism more popular among younger adults.
The divide has also become more visible in electoral politics, with progressive candidates making gains in Democratic primaries across the country. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, rose to prominence on an affordability-focused platform.
Vance has previously blamed decades of policy under both Republican and Democratic governments for the economic discontent, pointing to the loss of US manufacturing jobs, pressure on wages, and rising living costs.
Republicans have also faced weak ratings on the economy. The Marquette survey put Trump’s approval on the economy at 30% and on inflation and the cost of living at 22%, while respondents favored Democrats over Republicans on handling both issues.
Let’s be honest, whether Republican or Democrat the whole American political system is corrupt and owned by foreign agents and international banking interests. Too much money is given away that doesn’t help there own people, too many donations in the system and kickbacks to members of congress. olligarchs, corporations and banks rule by proxy, not puppets.
Same in NZ. LoL
Vance is just now figuring this out….

vance is a cowardly disingenuous scurrying bowing scraping toady to his power-tripping egotist YANK WANKER puppet-master the living breathing foul sack of con-artist excrement the dirty stinking lying fraudulent scamming corrupt contemptable sheltered arrogant fkn warpig-snake trump
Let’s face it. The corruption and dishonest nature of redistribution of public money into all sorts of shitwit ideas, bloated government nonsense. Do we really need to have all of those ministerial roles?
Things that do not make sense.
Not enough electricity in peek times yet we are installing Ai data centres.
New Zealand doesn’t have a true democracy. Parties choose candidates, we vote for who they pick. Not one party ever campaigned for data centres or collection of our personal whereabouts, phone call scanning. That isn’t democracy.
Government ignores covid jabs harms and deaths while ACC pays out compensation to these victims.
NZ are told that $30 billion is, in government words is unaccounted for. You would think with all the electronic digital transfer of money, the tools that Ai at your disposal, it would take moments to find out who stole the money. Is the government going hunt down who did this? Of course, not. That isn’t democracy.
This is the shit NZ citizens have to out up with.
The birthrate in this country is about 1.52%. I bet the kindergarten the classrooms numbers are falling off a cliff. In just a handful of summers this decline of population will reach every industry.
Why are people not choosing to get married or move in and create family? Too expensive. Legislated liability and lost property rights. People are not going to risk it.
The only way forward is to give more control to the citizens over government. Referendums on all legislation by the people each and every 3 months. This is not an idea. It works in practice. Switzerland.
And the New Zealand Loyal Party will initiate Citizen Referendums and possibly Armed Neutrality to keep us out of the Capitalist Faction known as the Military Industrial Complex, and spend the 1% Transactional Tax Monies on proper programs that benefit all of us!
Because capitalism as espoused by the US’s two main party’s has been such a run away success, right mate? Neo liberalism here in New Zealand has driven the nation to the economic and social brink, whilst actually increasing taxes. Taxes for everyone that is, save the 1%. Capitalism is socialism for the elites.
Socialism is still worse. It’s everything you complained about above, but on steroids.

The fake democracy in the US (very similar to the fake democracy in most “western” countries) is simply promoting discord with hard to miss political stunts – all funded by the same people who fund both, or even all wings of the fake democracy, to distract the masses as the country is pillaged and a totalitarian technocratic new world order is constructed around them.
