A gang of thieves has carried out a dramatic daylight robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris, making off with several of France’s crown jewels in what authorities are calling one of the most audacious art thefts in decades.
Footage circulating on social media shows a person in a yellow vest smashing a display case inside the museum’s Galerie d’Apollon. According to France 24, the group arrived on scooters Saturday morning, used an extendable ladder to reach a window, and broke into the gallery with angle grinders.
The French Culture Ministry confirmed that eight priceless artifacts were stolen, including a necklace given by Napoleon to Empress Marie Louise and the diadem of Empress Eugénie. The crown of Empress Eugénie, also targeted in the heist, was found nearby in a damaged state.

Investigators believe the thieves were either hired to obtain specific jewels or acted as part of a money-laundering operation. French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to recover the stolen treasures and said security will be strengthened at the Louvre to prevent further incidents.
They walked into Louvre Museum at 9:30 a.m.
Used a crane. Smashed a window.
Stole the French crown jewels in 4 minutes.
No violence. Just precision. If a world-famous museum can be robbed in broad daylight… what does that say about the guardians of culture? pic.twitter.com/cUn0DX9qnx
