Warning fake council workers trying to enter homes in Auckland

Auckland Council have issued a warning to the public to be on the lookout for fraudsters posing as building compliance staff in the wake of last week’s storm.

The warning comes as footage of a woman stealing an Onehunga flood-affected family’s footwear circulated on social media, causing outrage.

Council manager compliance response and investigations Kerri Fergusson said the impersonators were wearing plain clothes and were prevalent on the North Shore. ‘These impersonators are allegedly telling residents in the North Shore area that their houses need to be re-assessed.’

Fergusson said real Council inspectors had official ID, wore Council uniforms and drove Council branded vehicles.
