Thousands of protesters have gathered today outside the Governor-General’s Auckland residence on Mountain Road in Epsom.
Protesters are demanding the Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro, remove the government from office and call fresh elections. Constitutionally, as the Queen’s representative in New Zealand, Kiro has this power, but by convention it’s never exercised.
At one point the crowd could be heard chanting ‘You serve us!’
The Mountain Road protest has become a daily fixture in Auckland with people gathering from 11am to 1pm each day to protest. Today’s crowd was the biggest yet, as a sea of people filled one of Auckland’s most exclusive streets.
