Violence erupted in West Papua’s Manokwari province last week after a tribal leader died following injection with the AstraZeneca mRNA COVID medication.

Tensions are already high in West Papua, with pro-freedom protests throughout November and December, in response to Indonesia’s ongoing occupation of the region, which West Papuan nationalists claim to be illegal. Jakarta responded to the protests with a police crackdown and internet blackouts.
