Wellington woman found guilty of murdering elderly mother

Julia DeLuney has been found guilty of murdering her 79-year-old mother, Helen Gregory, whose body was discovered in her Khandallah home in January 2024.

Prosecutors alleged DeLuney staged the scene to resemble a fall from the attic after a confrontation, possibly involving financial motives.

The jury accepted the Crown’s argument that forensic evidence and DeLuney’s suspicious actions—including disposing of items the next morning—pointed to her guilt.

Despite the defence claiming a stranger committed the crime during a brief window of absence and highlighting DNA evidence that didn’t match DeLuney, the jury was unconvinced.

  1. How did Polkinghorne get off? He was accused of staging his wife’s death as a suicide – not guilty.

But DeLuney was accused of staging the scene to resemble a fall from the attic – guilty!!

What’s the conclusion? She staged it all wrong?
