Wesley College is appealing to keep its boarding hostels open until the end of the year after the Ministry of Education ordered their closure this Friday due to serious student safety incidents.
The Ministry suspended the school’s hostel licence following an Education Review Office report that found ongoing harmful behaviour, poor oversight, and an unsafe hostel culture despite earlier interventions.
While international students and NCEA candidates may stay temporarily, all other boarders must leave by week’s end.
Wesley’s trust board says it is taking urgent steps to meet the Ministry’s requirements and seeking legal advice as it works toward long-term cultural and structural reforms.
