A Whangārei couple entrusted as Oranga Tamariki caregivers are on trial facing 35 charges of child abuse, after a distressed girl fled their home cold, hungry and injured, leading to a police investigation.
The pair, who had cared for multiple vulnerable children since 2012, are accused of repeated violence and cruelty, including hitting the girl with a stick, burning her with a lighter, and confining another child without food. Evidence from a mother of the girl’s friend, medical staff, and other children has described patterns of alleged abuse ranging from physical assaults to forced punishment.
Four key witnesses will testify, and the trial, originally set for three weeks, may now extend to four.
