The woman at the centre of a trespass incident at New World Otaki has disputed the supermarket’s account of the event.
On 30 December last year she was trespassed from the supermarket for wearing a t-shirt with the words ‘Men aren’t women, even if you squint’ printed on it.
According to reports circulating online, the action was taken when a transgender member of staff took offence at the t-shirt.
In a subsequent Facebook post the supermarket said the woman was trespassed because, ‘she had been making targeted and offensive comments to team members over a period of time and this had resulted in some of our team members feeling uncomfortable and unsafe in their workplace.’
Legacy media outlet thepost.co.nz repeated the store’s claims, saying the trespass was not solely due to the t-shirt but because of her, ‘ongoing targeted and offensive conduct in the store over time.’
The Post also claimed the woman ‘was not physically removed from the store, but asked to leave after an inappropriate interaction, and was then verbally trespassed.’
However those claims have been rubbished by the woman – and she has received backing from a witness.
Her version was posted online today by women’s rights campaigner Ani O’Brien, who provided a detailed summary of the incident on Twitter (X).
The woman told O’Brien it all started when she went to the counter to buy a Lotto ticket.
Instead of handing them over the staff member threw the tickets at her.
In response she tossed the cash down on the counter.
A verbal exchange started in which the staff member accused her of throwing the money at him/her, to which the woman replied, ‘there was no need to throw the tickets at me either.’
‘It’s because you’re wearing an offensive t-shirt.’
‘Not if you’re based in reality.’
According to O’Brien’s tweet:
At this point the staff member became angry and began to shout ‘Don’t say it! Don’t say it! I’ll have you banned. You’re being abusive.’
She replied ‘Are you on some sort of power trip because I haven’t been abusive.’ She was taken aback and did not raise her voice despite the staff member shouting at her.
The staff member’s loudness drew the attention of the store manager at a time when the shop was busy.
The woman also denied claims she had targeted or made offensive comments to staff before:
‘she has never made derogatory comments to any staff members and notes that these allegations only arose after she questioned the manager’s handling of the incident. They are after the fact additions to the matter and she considers them entirely false.’
Release of personal details
A further concern for the woman was that her personal details began circulating online immediately after she engaged in written correspondence with store owner Matt Mullins. A trans rights group had also doxxed her.
Witness corroboration
O’Brien was later contacted by a person who witnessed events at the store. The witness said the woman was polite and never raised her voice, but the manager was ‘very firm’, and the trans person was ‘agitated like he couldn’t wait for it to happen.’
The witness later wrote to New World to complain about the store’s treatment of the woman.
Use of physical force
The woman also disputed claims by the supermarket and The Post that she had only been verbally trespassed, and that she had not been physically removed from the store.
According to O’Brien:
The manager approached and immediately began pushing her (hands firmly in her back). He is much larger than her and did not ask or instruct her leave before he began pushing. As he pushed he said ‘You have to leave the store for abusing my staff. You have to leave.’
The [trans] staff member continued to shout and scream.
She attempted to tell the manager she had said and done nothing abusive and asked for him to hear her account of what happened. He refused and pushed her out of the store.
At this point she was very upset and experiencing heart palpitations and pain. She shouted back into the store ‘you’ll never be a f****** woman’ and told the manager that the staff member was a ‘f****** crybaby’.
The incident has created a storm online with calls for shoppers to boycott New World and for Foodstuffs to immediately release CCTV footage.

This story is important from a number of perspectives such as:
– Under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 the trespassed Woman has “freedom of expression” which was breached.
