US President Donald Trump personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Joint Base Andrews with a military flyover, honour guard and 100-foot red carpet, opening a three-day Washington summit focused on trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and the Iran war.
Xi, making his first visit to Washington since 2015, arrived with his wife Peng Liyuan and senior Chinese officials before travelling to the capital for closed-door talks and a state dinner. The visit coincides with an agreement to extend the US-China trade truce until January, while both sides explore a broader economic deal involving tariffs, rare earth minerals and agricultural trade.
Xi said China and the US should be “partners rather than rivals” and argued that their respective national ambitions could coexist, while the elaborate reception underscored the significance the Trump administration is placing on the summit.
