Ukraine’s deepening corruption crisis has now reached the top levels of President Vladimir Zelensky’s administration, with anti-corruption agents conducting raids at the home and offices of his influential chief of staff, Andrey Yermak.
The operation, carried out by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), comes amid one of Kiev’s most serious graft scandals in years.
Investigative outlet Ukrainskaya Pravda published photos appearing to show agents entering Yermak’s premises in central Kiev. Yermak later confirmed that his residence had been searched and said he was cooperating fully with investigators. NABU stated it executed multiple warrants and plans to release further details.
The raid follows the explosive case of businessman Timur Mindich, a longtime Zelensky associate accused of running a major kickback operation in Ukraine’s energy sector. Mindich fled the country to Israel shortly before his home was searched, drawing attention after Ukrainian sanctions listed him as an Israeli citizen, raising questions about enforcement.
The widening investigation has already implicated two cabinet ministers and several former senior officials.
Despite mounting pressure, Zelensky has refused calls to dismiss Yermak, one of the most powerful figures in his government. Instead, Yermak was recently appointed as Ukraine’s lead negotiator for a US-backed framework on the conflict with Russia — a move critics say is intended to shield him.
Earlier this year, Zelensky’s attempt to place NABU and SAP under the prosecutor general’s office — a shift some observers believe was tied to another sensitive corruption probe — was halted after resistance from Western donors.
Commenting on the turmoil, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the scandal shows Ukraine is run by a “criminal gang driven by personal enrichment,” accusing the leadership of ignoring public interests.
The investigation remains ongoing as pressure grows both inside and outside Ukraine for greater transparency at the highest levels of government.
