A Syrian refugee has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a teenage girl at the Māngere Refugee Resettlement Centre in Auckland.
34-year-old Ahmad Al Hoean was found guilty by a jury on 16 charges, including two counts of rape and multiple offences involving sexual connection and indecent communication with a young person.
The offending began when the victim was 14 years old and had recently arrived in New Zealand as a refugee.
The victim, now in her 20s, described the long-term impact of the abuse in a victim impact statement read to the Manukau District Court, outlining significant psychological harm and disruption to her education.
Immigration New Zealand said it regretted the centre’s failure to protect someone in its care and confirmed that when refugees are convicted of serious offending, an assessment is carried out to determine their liability for deportation.
