Black Caps hold first-innings edge despite England fightback

New Zealand will need a strong response on day three of the deciding Test after England clawed their way back into the contest at Trent Bridge.

The Black Caps looked set for a massive first-innings total after Devon Conway (157) and Tom Latham (151) powered them to 317 without loss, but a dramatic collapse saw them lose their final 10 wickets for just 121 runs to be dismissed for 438.

England then counterattacked impressively, with Ben Duckett smashing 113 and Jacob Bethell finishing unbeaten on 74 as the hosts closed on 223-2, trailing by 215 runs. England captain Ben Stokes sparked the turnaround with a four-wicket haul, while New Zealand also suffered a setback after seamer Blair Tickner was ruled out of the remainder of the match with concussion following a blow from Jofra Archer.
