Mexican boxing star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, was arrested by U.S. immigration agents in Los Angeles and faces deportation to Mexico, where he is wanted for alleged involvement in organised crime and ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.
The arrest came days after his high-profile loss to Jake Paul in California. U.S. officials claim Chavez Jr has a history of weapons-related offenses and immigration fraud, and suggest cartel connections through his U.S. citizen spouse.
Chavez Jr’s lawyer has denied the allegations, calling the arrest politically motivated. The former champion had recently voiced concerns over rising immigration raids in Los Angeles.
