UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing renewed demands for transparency over his connections with Manchester City after Greater Manchester authorities confirmed he held one official meeting with club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak in October 2021 and ‘encountered him informally’ at a match in 2019.
The disclosures follow controversy over Burnham’s apparent sympathy for City’s Abu Dhabi owners after an independent commission found the club guilty of financial misconduct involving more than £830 million in concealed funding.
Conservative figures have questioned whether Burnham’s previous dealings with the club influenced his public response, while rival Premier League teams have reportedly expressed unease about potential political interference in City’s appeal.
Burnham insists his interactions were limited, maintains that hospitality was properly declared, and has pledged to publish further details. With penalties still undecided and City challenging the ruling, the controversy continues to generate political and sporting repercussions.
