Alex Carey struck an emotional maiden Ashes century on his home ground and Usman Khawaja added a defiant 82 as Australia seized control on day one of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide.
Sent in to bat after Pat Cummins won the toss in extreme heat, Australia reached 326 for 8 at stumps despite the late withdrawal of Steve Smith through illness. Carey’s 106, made in front of family and a record Adelaide Oval crowd, was marked by a tribute to his late father and anchored the innings after England’s Jofra Archer ripped through the middle order with 3 for 29.
Khawaja, recalled unexpectedly, made the most of his reprieve with a composed knock. With Australia already leading the series 2–0, the hosts ended a testing opening day firmly in the driving seat.
