Injured Penrith star Nathan Cleary has finally captured his first Dally M Medal, accepting the honour by video from home as he recovers from a compound fracture of his left leg suffered in the Panthers’ preliminary final defeat.
Cleary dominated the voting, finishing on 67 points, 14 clear of Cronulla’s Braydon Trindall, after sealing the award with two rounds remaining.
The Panthers playmaker thanked his family, teammates and girlfriend Mary Fowler for their support, crediting those around him for helping shape his career.
In the NRLW, Brisbane fullback Tamika Upton secured her third Dally M Medal in four seasons, edging Raecene McGregor 31-29 ahead of the Broncos’ grand final clash with the Roosters.
Sunday’s decider will also feature a special tribute to Jai Arrow following his motor neurone disease diagnosis, replacing the traditional pre-game entertainment.
