Taranaki police are investigating an assault incident that occurred after a premier grade rugby match at Yarrow Stadium on Saturday, where a Coastal Rugby player was punched by a Spotswood United player during post-match handshakes.

The assaulted player was knocked to the ground, requiring ambulance transport to Taranaki Base Hospital for examination, and was later discharged.

Taranaki Rugby Football Union (TRFU) chief executive Mike Sandle told media he was disappointed over the incident, which marred an otherwise spirited game. He confirmed that only the two players were directly involved, though there was some pushing and shoving afterward. The TRFU has initiated a judicial process and is supporting both clubs while the investigation proceeds.

Spotswood United chairperson Shanan Dick affirmed the club’s commitment to ensuring player safety and maintaining game integrity, stating that they are cooperating with both clubs and supporting the well-being of the involved players.

Coastal Rugby and Sports Club chairperson Janet Fleming referred to the TRFU statement and declined further comment. The incident, currently under police investigation, occurred following a closely contested match that Coastal Rugby won 35-29.
