The Crusaders have confirmed head coach Rob Penney will step down at the end of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, with former assistant and current All Blacks coach Scott Hansen set to take over from 2027.

Penney, who succeeded Scott Robertson in 2023, said it was the right time to leave after three seasons in charge, describing the role as an “honour of a lifetime” and reaffirming his deep Canterbury roots.

Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge praised Penney’s leadership, humility and commitment to players and staff during a transitional period for the club. Hansen, a former Crusaders halfback and assistant coach during several title-winning campaigns, returns after coaching roles with the All Blacks, Japan and other international teams.

Mansbridge said Hansen’s connection to the club, tactical expertise and leadership made him a natural choice to guide the Crusaders into their next era.
