In a defiant move that has rippled through the world of darts, UK star Deta Hedman has pulled out of the Denmark Open, refusing to compete against transgender opponent Noa-Lynn van Leuven in the quarterfinals.

Hedman’s decision to forfeit the match has ignited a fiery debate across the sport.

Pushing back against rumours of illness as her reason for withdrawing, Hedman laid her position bare on X: ‘No fake illness, I said I wouldn’t play a man in a ladies event.’

She went further, rejecting any potential compensation she may have forfeited, declaring, ‘This subject is causing much angst in the sport I love. People can be whoever they want in life, but I don’t think biological born men should compete in Women’s sport.’

Despite the controversy, van Leuven advanced to the semifinals but was eventually defeated by Beau Graves.

Meanwhile, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), led by CEO Matt Porter, confirmed that van Leuven complied with all guidelines set by the Darts Regulation Authority and the International Olympic Committee. These regulations include maintaining a testosterone level below 10 nanomoles per liter for over a year and not altering gender identity for at least four years, ensuring no ‘presumption of advantage.’
