FBI uncovers major NBA gambling and money laundering scandal linked to Mafia

NBA news

A sweeping FBI investigation into illegal gambling and money laundering linked to La Cosa Nostra Mafia crime families has led to the arrests of more than two dozen people, including Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.

Federal officials said the operation — spanning 11 states — uncovered schemes where NBA players and coaches allegedly manipulated betting outcomes and laundered profits through cryptocurrency.

Both Billups and Rozier were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering and have been placed on immediate leave by the NBA. The league said it is reviewing the indictments and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the game.

The investigation, dubbed “Operation Zhen Diagram” and “Nothing But Net,” revealed that suspects used inside player information, rigged poker games, and “straw bettors” to exploit gambling systems.

Prosecutors accused Rozier of faking an injury during a 2023 game to enable fraudulent bets, while Billups and former NBA guard Damon Jones allegedly acted as “face cards” to lure victims into rigged games.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the case marks a major step in cracking down on illegal sports betting networks, warning that those who abuse their influence for profit will be held accountable.
