Joe Root has been reappointed England’s Test captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement, while former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming will take over as head coach after Brendon McCullum’s departure.
Root, England’s highest Test run-scorer, resumes the role he previously held between 2017 and 2022 and will lead the side in next month’s home series against Pakistan.
Fleming, who has enjoyed major success coaching the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL but has no prior experience leading a national Test team, said his focus would be on building on recent foundations while ensuring long-term success.
The appointments come as England look to reverse a decline in Test results, having slipped to seventh in the World Test Championship after failing to win major series against Australia or India under McCullum.
