Kavem Hodge produced a composed unbeaten century to steady West Indies on day three of the third Test against the Black Caps at Mount Maunganui, frustrating the hosts and ensuring his side avoided the follow-on.
West Indies reached 381 for six at stumps, still 194 runs behind New Zealand’s declared first-innings total of 575 for eight. Hodge reached his second Test hundred from 227 balls, overcoming a painful blow on 97 before finishing the day 109 not out.
His innings anchored the tourists’ reply and carried them safely to within 200 runs of New Zealand just before the close. For the Black Caps, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel claimed his first Test wickets on home soil, ending the day with two scalps alongside Jacob Duffy.
