Ireland edge past Wallabies

Ireland bid farewell to head coach Andy Farrell ahead of his secondment to the British and Irish Lions with a hard-fought 22-19 victory over Joe Schmidt’s Australia in Dublin.

The gripping contest, held as part of the Irish Rugby Football Union’s 150th anniversary celebrations, saw the Wallabies threaten an upset with a try from Max Jorgensen and 14 points from Noah Lolesio.

Despite numerous handling errors and a disruptive Australian defense, Ireland clawed their way back with tries from Josh van der Flier, Caelan Doris, and a decisive late score by replacement hooker Gus McCarthy, sealing their third win in four Autumn Nations Series matches.

Farrell’s side overcame a slow and error-laden start, trailing 10-0 after Jorgensen’s first-half try, but rallied in the second half.

Doris’ crucial try gave Ireland their first lead, though Australia regained the advantage with Lolesio’s penalties. McCarthy’s try, followed by a composed conversion from Jack Crowley, ensured a dramatic finish at the Aviva Stadium.

While Farrell’s departure raises questions for Ireland’s Six Nations campaign, the victory provides momentum for their opener against England on 1 February. Schmidt’s Wallabies, despite the loss, proved their mettle, setting the stage for a fierce rivalry when Farrell leads the Lions next summer.
