Kangaroos edge Kiwis in World Cup opening classic

Australia survived a fierce New Zealand challenge to claim a dramatic 24-22 victory in a spectacular opening to the Rugby League World Cup in Sydney, with Jack Bostock’s hat-trick proving decisive in a contest packed with extraordinary tries and momentum swings.

The Kiwis made a sensational start through Casey McLean’s acrobatic corner finish, before Australian intercept tries from Bostock and Tom Trbojevic helped produce a 10-10 halftime deadlock. Kalyn Ponga marked his international debut with two second-half tries, repeatedly putting New Zealand ahead, but Australia responded through Bostock and a breathtaking 80-metre solo effort from Reece Walsh.

With four minutes remaining, Bostock soared above the defence to complete his treble and secure a narrow victory for the defending champions. New Zealand’s semifinal prospects remain largely intact, although concerns surround Ponga after he left the field with a suspected broken arm.
