Liam Lawson secured his first points of the Formula One season by finishing seventh in the sprint race ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit.

Starting 13th for Racing Bulls, Lawson gained places steadily during the 19-lap race, climbing as high as fifth before dropping two positions late to earn two points. He stayed out on hard tyres while several rivals pitted, but said the strategy may compromise his options for Sunday’s Grand Prix because it leaves him one hard-tyre set short.

Up front, George Russell won for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, extending his championship lead after another strong result.
