Messi inspires dramatic Argentina fightback to crush Egypt’s World Cup dream

Argentina staged a remarkable late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book a place in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals after trailing by two goals deep into the second half.

The reigning champions appeared destined for a stunning exit as Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico put Egypt in control, despite Lionel Messi missing an early penalty.

Cristian Romero sparked the revival with an 79th-minute header before Messi levelled five minutes later, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround in stoppage time, heading home the winner moments after Egypt’s appeals for a penalty were waved away.

The victory sends Argentina into a last-eight clash with either Colombia or Switzerland, while Egypt’s memorable tournament run ended in heartbreaking fashion after coming within minutes of eliminating the defending champions.
