Cameron Millar delivered a match-winning moment to hand the Highlanders a dramatic 25-23 comeback victory over defending champions the Crusaders in their Super Rugby Pacific season opener in Dunedin.
The Southland first-five slotted a pressure 48-metre penalty in the 78th minute after a Crusaders obstruction call, sealing the upset before the Highlanders held firm against a frantic late surge.
Earlier, the match had swung repeatedly, with Caleb Tangitau opening the scoring for the hosts, while Noah Hotham and later Will Jordan helped push the Crusaders into the lead during a tense second half.
Strong attacking phases led by Jonah Lowe and Angus Ta’avao helped the Highlanders build momentum, and despite the Crusaders briefly regaining control late, Millar’s clutch strike ensured the hosts celebrated a statement win to launch the 30th year of Super Rugby.
