Wellington Phoenix have kept their faint A-League finals hopes alive with a deserved 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at Apollo Projects Stadium in Christchurch, a result that also condemns the visitors to their first wooden spoon finish.
The Phoenix dominated large periods of the match, taking the lead through Ifeanyi Eze’s 10th goal of the season before Brandon Borrello levelled for the Wanderers just before halftime.
Wellington regained control after the break, with Kazuki Nagasawa heading home the winner from Tim Payne’s second assist of the night, sealing a victory that keeps their slim playoff chances alive while confirming Western Sydney’s place at the bottom of the ladder.
