Former Queensland coach Sir Graham Lowe is leading a push to bring a State of Origin match to New Zealand, believing it would be a game-changer for the country.

Lowe, the only Kiwi to have coached in the series, recalls the overwhelming support he received from New Zealand fans in 1991 and is determined to see the event played on home soil.

With backing from Sports Minister Mark Mitchell and Christchurch’s Te Kaha stadium, which opens in 2026, Lowe plans to formally submit a bid to the NRL next month.

The earliest available neutral venue slot is in 2027, and Lowe is confident the event would be one of the biggest in New Zealand’s sporting history.

He also believes Australian players would embrace the opportunity, saying they would play “on the beach if needed.”
