South Africa secured their first major global cricket title by defeating Australia by five wickets in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s.
Resuming day four at 213-2 and needing 69 more runs, the Proteas faced early jitters with the dismissals of Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs, but Aiden Markram’s brilliant 136 anchored the chase.
Although Markram fell just before the finish, David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne calmly saw the team home, with Verreynne striking the winning run. The victory marked the joint second-highest successful run chase in a Test at Lord’s and made South Africa the third team to win the World Test Championship.
