Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance following a Europa League match against Manchester United.
The 30-year-old Spaniard says the substance was part of a medication used to treat hair loss related to his ongoing recovery from testicular cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2016.
Alvarez expressed shock at the result and stated the use was unintentional. UEFA has declined to comment while disciplinary proceedings are ongoing, and Athletic Bilbao has voiced full support for the player as the investigation continues.
