England and Australia produced a thrilling opening day of the Ashes in Perth, with 19 wickets tumbling in a frantic contest on a fast, lively pitch.
England collapsed for just 172 after choosing to bat, despite bright innings from Harry Brook and Ollie Pope, as Mitchell Starc ripped through the lineup with an outstanding 7-58.
But England’s five-man pace attack roared back, delivering their fastest collective spell on record and reducing Australia to 123-9. Captain Ben Stokes, returning from injury, led the charge with a superb five-wicket haul, leaving England 49 runs ahead and in a strong position to seize a 1-0 series lead.
