Trans athlete’s win sparks uproar at California girls’ track championship

A biological male competing in California’s girls’ state track and field championship has reignited fierce debate over fairness in women’s sports.

AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete from Jurupa Valley High School, claimed first place in the girls’ triple jump and high jump over the weekend, despite widespread opposition from female athletes, parents, and advocates.

Hernandez’s participation and victories deprived female competitors of state titles, prompting the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to hurriedly introduce rule changes allowing displaced girls to still receive medals—though they were forced to share the podium with a male competitor.

Protests erupted at the event, where women’s rights supporters rallied against what they see as the erasure of female-only competition.

Activist Sophia Lorey was removed from the venue for handing out “Save Girls’ Sports” wristbands, while an LGBTQ protester was arrested for a violent attack.

President Donald Trump and gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton condemned the inclusion of male athletes in girls’ events, with Trump warning of funding cuts and federal investigations now underway.
