European football governing body UEFA has given FIFA until 2 November to produce documents and respond to 42 questions concerning its leadership, transparency and decision-making processes.
In a letter obtained by BBC Sport, UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis criticised FIFA president Gianni Infantino for failing to adequately explain how several controversial decisions were reached, despite apologising for a proposed World Cup commercial investment arrangement.
The eight-page list of questions covers the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise investment initiative, the FIFA Peace Prize and a disputed suspended ban involving United States striker Folarin Balogun. UEFA maintains that withdrawing proposals, admitting mistakes and promising governance reforms cannot replace accountability for decisions already made, particularly where the FIFA Council was excluded from key discussions.
Football Association chair and FIFA vice-president Debbie Hewitt has questioned Infantino’s suitability to remain president if he fails to provide satisfactory answers. UEFA has not indicated what action it might take if FIFA misses the deadline, while the world governing body has been approached for comment.
