Liverpool became the first team to win at Sunderland in the Premier League this season after Virgil van Dijk’s second-half header secured a 0-1 victory at the Stadium of Light.
Arne Slot’s side dominated possession and created multiple first-half chances, with Florian Wirtz hitting the post and forcing saves from goalkeeper Robin Roefs, before finally breaking through just after the hour mark from a Mohamed Salah corner, with Habib Diarra inadvertently helping the ball over the line.
Sunderland improved after the break but could not find an equaliser, while Liverpool suffered a setback when Wataru Endo was stretchered off with an ankle injury. The win, only Liverpool’s second league victory of 2026, moves them to within two points of fifth-placed Chelsea, while Sunderland remain 11th.
