The Black Caps piled on a dominant first-innings total before the visitors responded strongly late on day two.
Resuming at 334/1, New Zealand declared at 575/8 shortly after tea, led by Devon Conway’s commanding double century of 227, his highest Test score.
Contributions from Rachin Ravindra, who remained unbeaten on 72, and a late flourish from Ajaz Patel added to the imposing total.
In reply, the West Indies made a solid start, reaching 110 without loss at stumps as openers John Campbell and Brandon King handled the New Zealand attack comfortably.
With little assistance for bowlers, the match appears poised for high scoring as the final Test heads into day three.
