Facebook’s Metaverse has its first embassy

The tiny nation of Barbados has signed a deal aimed at opening an embassy in Facebook’s new virtual reality world, Metaverse.

The first step in the new digital diplomatic frontier saw the government of Barbados sign an agreement to establish a digital embassy in Decentraland, a user-owned, Ethereum-based digital environment. The development was confirmed in a tweet from Decentraland.

In a statement the government stated that the opening of the embassy in January 2022 would make Barbados the first in the world to recognise ‘digital sovereign land’.
